When constructing your indoor vegetable garden, tomatoes are always a nice choice to start with. Heirloom tomatoes are a great choice. They have a variety of shapes, textures, colors and are flavor rich. They can grow quite well with an indoor setup with a little work and know-how. With an inside garden you can grow them any time of the year. Having your own fresh grown tomatoes for your home cooked meals will really make a difference in the overall taste.
Make sure you select a location that provides 6 to 7 hours of sunlight a day. Temperatures should not be greater than 75 Fahrenheit and no lower than 65 Fahrenheit at night. Easily done when its inside your home. You can also use growling lamps if you can’t find a position with sufficient light or heat.
When first beginning, fill up the starting containers with a moist potting mix. Plant about 3 or 4 seeds in each container about a quarter inch down. Put on a tray and cover with plastic to keep moisture levels high. Make sure the soil does not dry out, misting the peat pots will help.
Once they are ready, transplant the seedlings to their final planters once they over an inch or so tall. 6-12 inch containers will do depending on the type of heirloom tomato and or if you are planting more than 1 in each.
Every week you should water the plants and even use some tomato specific fertilizer would be great. It’s very important to not over water heirloom tomatos, this could cause root rot and other problems that will destroy your little crop.
Black Sea Man Tomato 10 Seeds – Heirloom
This small plant produces medium sized dark brown fruits that are very rich in flavor. They are certified organic and take about 75 days from germination transplant. They can look pretty strange when peeled with odd skeleton like veins under the skin but don’t judge a book by its cover! They are fantastic!
Italian Grape Tomato 30 Seeds – Heirloom
This is a grape cluster that hails from italy. The plant can grow up to 3 feet and produces a small bite sized tomato. They are superb looking grape like clusters of tomotos. You will usually get about 8-10 of them a cluster. They take about 80 days from germination.
Black Krim Tomato 30 Seeds – Russian Heirloom
These are dark redish purple tomotos with a delicate skin. The full flavor has a saltiness that really adds to a meal. They are very juicy. These will grow out to be globe shaped to about 8-12 oz each.
Organic Yellow Pear Tomato 75 Seeds –Heirloom
These very special and very different looking tomatoes are of an extremely old variety. This plant produces large numbers of bright yellow bite sized pear shaped produce. They have a tangy and delicious flavor to them. They take around 75 days.
